Reasons for Infertility in Men and Women

By Casey Fields

Most all infertile couples will try many different ideas in order to have a baby. What's disheartening in the whole affair is just figuring out the reason for infertility. Knowing why is the key in having any chance of a successful pregnancy.

For women, infertility is caused by several things. Ovulatory problems are one of the foremost causes of infertility in women. Ovulation is when a woman's egg becomes mature with the aid of hormones. When some factors like producing too much androgen, stress, or premature aging of ovaries happen, ovulatory dysfunction occurs. Hypothyroidism or hypothyroidism, abnormal ovarian development or prolactin can also be factors in making ovulatory problems happen in women.

Other reasons for infertility in women are endometriosis, scarred or damaged fallopian tubes and presence of uterine tissue in the lower abdomen. Once a woman is diagnosed with any of these conditions, she will soon be subjected to a battery of standard diagnostic tests.

In Men, it is either limited or abnormal sperm that is the culprit reason for infertility. And finally there are many unknown reasons why some couples just can not get pregnant. To address this, many methods have been created for these different infertility factors.

Some of the methods made available to the infertile couple are artificial insemination by husband, surgery and in vitro fertilization. Hormone therapy is also another type of option that the woman can receive if she is having ovulation induction and other forms of assisted reproductive technologies.

Sometimes a women's body itself works against the reproductive process by producing anti-sperm antibodies. These antibodies seek out and kill the mans sperm.

Commonly known as an "allergy to sperm", these anti-sperm antibodies cause the women's body to think its allergic to the man's sperm. And women aren't the only ones with this strange condition. Men can even be allergic to their own sperm. Treatment for this condition can increase the changes for an infertile couple to get pregnant. This treatment for this condition is called intra-cytoplasmic sperm injection.

The cost of treatment for infertility can be great. Depending on a couples financial capacity could determine the outcome. Other issues outside of monetary ones are family medical history. But the biggest obstacle in most case is simple cost.

If a couple can't get pregnant naturally, trying assisted reproductive means is always a viable alternative. And finally, If after all options are exhausted, and the reasons for infertility are still unknown or just financially out of reach, there is always surrogacy or adoption. - 33375
